Title A Conversational Approach to Text-Based Computer-Administered Questionnaires

Abstract By removing the interviewer from the data collection process, computer assisted self interviewing (CASI) eliminates interviewer-related variance and increases reports of some sensitive behaviours. However, removing interviewers also eliminates the conversational skills they bring to the job, skills we have found can improve response accuracy under certain circumstances (Schober & Conrad, 1997; Conrad & Schober, under review). We report a CASI experiment in which respondents are able to ask the computer to clarify concepts and in which the computer can offer clarification when respondents seem to need it. This improves response accuracy just as in interviews but only if respondents take advantage of the opportunity to clarify concepts.
